"I wanted a way to provide our international trainees with reliable, easy-to-access relocation information at the lowest possible cost to our organization. Newcomersweb was easily the right choice."

Buckhead
Boundaries: North: Atlanta city limits; East: Atlanta city limits; South: Downtown connector; West: Cobb County line

Originally the home of Cherokee and Creek Indian tribes, Buckhead’s beginnings can be traced to South Carolina native Henry Irby. In 1838, at a time when much of the Atlanta area was being auctioned off in lotteries to European settlers, Irby purchased 203 acres of land now known as Buckhead. He named the land "Irbyville" and at its heart built a tavern and general store. Outside the tavern he posted the now famous head of a buck, a landmark that later inspired the area’s name, "Buckhead."

Over time, Buckhead evolved from a sparsely populated outpost to the neighborhood of choice for wealthy Atlantans. In 1952, the city of Atlanta annexed Bu
ckhead, and in 1959, the neighborhood became home to the city’s first shopping mall, Lenox Mall.

Today Buckhead is home to an exclusive mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues, as well as hundreds of old and new mansions, including the state’s Governor’s Mansion. The heavily wooded, rolling terrain is broken into a number of neighborhoods perfect for well-to-do professionals and their families. Homes range from renovated cottages and historic properties to new mansions and full-fledged estates. A number of historic country clubs and private schools also define the area, and the public schools are some of the best in the state.

North of Garden Hills, at the intersection of Peachtree and West Paces Ferry Road, is the section of Buckhead formerly known as the "Village," but n
ow under extensive renovation. Ben Carter Properties is transforming the area once known as Atlanta’s "Bourbon Street" into "The Streets of Buckhead," a $1.5 billion redesign that will transform eight acres of former pubs and night clubs into 600,000 square feet of luxury dining, boutiques and posh hotels. The development will be pedestrian friendly and bring many new retailers, including Hermès, Bottega Veneta, Borrelli, and Oscar de la Renta, into Atlanta. The development will also include office space and residential units, and is slated to open its first phase in November 2009. For more information, visit www.streetsofbuckhead.com.

Buckhead’s commercial district extends on Peachtree Road past Piedmont Road to what locals call "shoppers’ paradise." Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza, two
of Atlanta’s largest and most luxurious malls, are located here at the intersection of Peachtree Street and Lenox Road. Shoppers come in droves to shop at large department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as smaller boutiques such as BCBG, Max Azria, Burberry, and Brooks Brothers. While both malls are upscale and provide valet parking, Lenox Mall is more trendy with the requisite mid-priced stores like the Gap, the Limited, and Macys. Phipps Plaza, on the other hand, boasts crystal chandeliers, dark wood molding, magnificent staircases, elegant white columns, and a domed skylight. The mall provides concierge, babysitting, and personal shopping services. Stores include names like Saks Fifth Avenue, Juicy Couture, Gucci, Cole Haan, and Tiffany & Co
. The mall also is home to a 14-screen movie theater and popular restaurants/night spots The Tavern at Phipps and Twist.
